MOONLIGHT SONATA GUITAR TAB
The first movement of this superb piano sonata written by
Beethoven in 1801 can be played on guitar fairly accurately.
The piece must be played with the right accents: (1) the first note
of each triplet is stronger than the others, (2) the first beat of
the bar is stronger than the third, and both of these are stronger
than the second and fourth. No accents at all or false accents
breaking in makes the piece dull or patchy. It is also important
to play with a feel that is persuasive rather than percussive
(from commentary by Donald Francis Tovey).
Use of the thumb on the fretboard is necessary. It is required for
most 6th string (base) notes except for the open E note, and is also
needed for the 5th string (bars 13, 16, 18, 20, 27, 50, 52, 54). Not
easy but there is no other way to play the important base notes.
However you can avoid them altogether and make the bars easier
as well as being able to play the triplets in full in some bars.
This piece should be played in the effective key of Am (capo 4), as
this allows you to play the ripple sequence, with its essential
repeated base note played as the open E string. Capo 4 enables you
to play in the correct key and thus play with a recording or
someone on piano, and reach the difficult wide chord of bar 6.
The disadvantage is that the highest note, in the ripple sequence
(bar 35), is beyond the frets, at least on a Stratocaster. However,
you can play this note accurately as a harmonic beyond the fretboard.
The piece varies from easy in some bars where no fret movement is
needed to quite difficult in other bars. Thankfully the piece is
slow, but reaching some of the unusual chords in time is a challenge.
Once you have learnt the piece, try improvising or playing lead with
the piano version. You may be surprised at the variations you can
create. Applying the guitar's features, such as slides and bends,
also adds interest.
Further:
Bars 6, 43. Challenging chord, play the base note with thumb and the
fourth string without muffling the open 1st string (melody note).
Bar 10. For interesting effect, slide using 4th finger to 1st note,
you will need 1st finger free to play the chord on the last beat.
Bar 21. Challenging to reach the two chords including the base notes.
Bars 28 to 31. Surprisingly easy, as if written for guitar.
Bars 32 to 37. Ripple sequence, easier than it sounds, two fingers
move up and down guitar without change in relative position.
Bars 66, 67. The amazing cloud effect, easy.
